FRAGMENTS OF GLIMPSES

THE BEACH

The waves are rolling forever. The perennial sound of the ocean washes over our problems. The sand takes all the pressures of our life and allows us to dig our feet. The bright sun gives warmth, like a stove to a cat. The sea gulls probably shout our names, giving us all the attention we need.

THE CASHEW FRUIT FOREST

The smell of ripened cashew fruit is intoxicating. The rays of sun are dancing, following the lead set by the swaying leaves of the evergreen forest, to the sweet music of the wind. We pick the fallen fruit, separate the cashews and put them in our bags. As the dusk sets, the crickets start chirping. The fireflies try their best to illuminate the forest.

THE LIBRARY

I stand at the doorway to the library. The sound of people turning newspapers wash over me. I hand over the book to the librarian, who is so old the first book in the library might have been placed by him. As I entered the books section, the smell of old books hit immediately. Only in public libraries can one get very old, rare books. I go to my favourite section which is fantasy, where books have the pictures drawn by artists like Michael Whelan which depict imaginary beings in a world created from some author’s fertile imagination. Outside the window there is an Ashwatha tree, whose leaves (I would imagine) clap, whenever I find a novel I have not read. It is curious though, that every time I revisit the library, I see a book I have not seen before. I would imagine the ancient librarian would track my routine and place those books there, for me to find.

~END~

(Author Notes: These pieces were written as part of description exercise in
creative writing workshop. These are actually incomplete. Aim was to describe and add as much details as possible while describing things. I wrote these along with "Chinese corner" essay, which in the end, I presented to the class. )
