Movie night

Simran had just come from school. She had immediately changed her dress and kept the green frock in the bed. She had planned to wear that dress to the movie tonight. Her mother was not in town. So, her father had agreed to take her to the movie tonight. The movie starred her favourite actress and what's more, the character’s name was also the same as hers. It was like a buy 1 get 1 offer.

But when her father came home, he slammed the door. Her heartbeat started increasing as she saw something was wrong. Even before he kept his bag on the table, he started scolding his boss. He was saying something related to office politics. He was shouting all the while he was in the room where he got dressed in home clothes. Simran was standing in the hall with her hands held together. Simran knew he would take a long time to come out of his anger. She was looking for the window of opportunity to bring up tonight’s movie business. But her heart was beating in her mouth, not allowing her to speak a word. He went to the kitchen and started cooking. She closed her sweating fist. Oh god why did he go to the kitchen. It seemed as though the acoustics had suddenly increased in the kitchen.  He punctuated every complaint with a loud bang of the utensil. And with every sound her heart started beating louder. Every passing minute meant less chances of getting a ticket, and she wanted to see the movie from the balcony. When she felt her heart had come out and was ready to go to her mother’s place, she had an eureka moment.

She went to the cassette player and played the movie song. This song even her father had liked. But when Kumar Sanu’s soothing voice came out of the player, her father shouted “Simran I am not in the mood. Please switch off the song.”. At this moment, she knew there was no hope. Her hands were shaking, tears were brimming in her eyes, her face had heated up. Before she could start sobbing, she went to her room banging her door closed. She covered herself and she cried and cried.

After an eternity she heard a soft knock on the room door.

~END~

(Author Notes: This story was written as part of Creative Writing workshop exercise to show the emotion rather than mentioning it. I wanted to intentionally hide the movie name. It was Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge.)
